One of our biggest issues with this book is that Mercy does not actively participate in the events that transpire. Mercy is a frustrating character in that for all of her "independence" and "stubbornness" she often allows the men in her life to make decisions for her. Its not really that shes incompetent, just that despite her supposed qualms about their archaic way of thinking, she trusts their judgment rather than her own. So if Warren or Adam or Sam tell her shes to weak or its not her place to do something, she'll argue a bit for show, but will ultimately give in. Point is, she sits the entire first half of the book out until there is no one else left to take care of business, and then gets off her ass...
